Women own approximately 30% of registered MSMEs in Trinidad & Tobago.
Across the Caribbean, women are starting businesses, generating income, and contributing meaningfully to economic activity.
And yet…
Access to financing remains one of their biggest barriers.
Globally, the pattern becomes even clearer.
💼 Women-led businesses face an estimated $93 billion financing gap across Latin America and the Caribbean.
💼 Black women founders receive less than 1% of venture capital funding.
And in multiple studies, women entrepreneurs consistently report that access to capital-not capability-is the primary constraint to growth.
So let’s ask the question that matters:
“If women are building businesses…why aren’t those businesses being properly funded?”
🔴This Isn’t Just a Funding Problem
It’s a readiness problem.
Or more precisely-
It’s what I call:
The Readiness Gap
The space between:
✔ a business that’s working in reality
and
❌ a business that’s recognizable within financial systems.
And until we name that gap clearly, we’ll keep misdiagnosing the problem.
“Your business can be successful in practice-and still invisible in structure.”
🔴What the Data is actually revealing (Beyond the Headlines)
The statistics are often presented as proof of inequality-and they are.
But they’re also revealing something even more specific.
When institutions like the Inter-American Development Bank and OECD analyze lending patterns, they are not simply measuring bias.
They’re measuring risk.
And risk, in financial systems, isn’t emotional.
It’s structural.
That’s because a lender, investor or a partner isn’t asking:
🤔 “Is this founder hardworking?”
🤔 “Is this business meaningful?”
They’re asking:
🗣️ “Can I understand how this business performs over time?”
🗣️ “Can I predict what will happen next?”
And that distinction matters.
Because it reframes the entire conversation.
So what appears as exclusion is often also:
👉🏾 an evaluation mismatch
Where the way businesses are built…
does not align with the way businesses are assessed.
“Financial systems don’t reject effort.
They reject what they cannot confidently measure.”
🔴The Case Beneath the Data
Let’s take this even further.
Research across Latin America and the Caribbean shows that women-led businesses are:
👑 highly active in commerce
👑 strong contributors to local economies
👑 more likely to reinvest in communities
And yet, they are significantly less likely to receive financing at scale.
Why?
Because many operate in what we can call:
💰 informal or semi-structured systems
This includes:
💰 variable pricing
💰 undocumented transactions
💰 inconsistent revenue cycles
💰 reliance on relationships over systems
None of these are signs of weakness.
They are signs of adaptation.
But in a financial system, adaptation is not the metric.
Predictability is.
🔴Revenue Is Not the Signal You Think It Is
And this is where many founders get caught.
Because they believe:
🗣️ “If I’m making money, I should qualify for funding.”
And in principle, that feels logical.
But in practice, revenue alone is not enough.
Because revenue answers one question:
💵 “Did money come in?”
Financial systems are asking something else:
💵 “Can this happen again, consistently, without uncertainty?”
That is the difference between:
📌Revenue and Predictable Revenue
“Revenue creates activity.
Predictable revenue creates confidence.”
🔴Two Businesses, One Decision Framework
Let’s slow this down and look at how institutions think.
Imagine two businesses.
Business A generates higher income in a given month.
But that income comes from:
💰 multiple sources
💰 inconsistent pricing
💰 irregular timing
Business B generates less income.
But it does so through:
💵 repeat clients
💵 fixed pricing
💵 consistent delivery
From a founder’s perspective, Business A looks stronger.
However, from a lender’s perspective, Business B is:
🏆 easier to understand
🏆 easier to forecast
🏆 easier to trust
And that’s what drives funding decisions.
“The system doesn’t reward who earns more.
It rewards what can be understood faster.”
🔴Why This Gap Persists for Black and Caribbean Women
This is where context matters - deeply.
Black and Caribbean women founders are often building within:
😶 resource constraints
😶 limited access to capital
😶 environments that reward adaptability over structure
In other words, they’re building businesses that:
🧺 work in real life…
But aren’t always designed to:
🏦 translate into institutional language.
And that creates a hidden disadvantage.
Because the business isn’t failing…
It’s simply not (yet):
✅ documented
✅ standardized
✅ predictable
“Many women don’t lack capability.
They lack systems that translate their capability into credibility.”
🔴The Readiness Gap (Fully Defined)
The Readiness Gap exists when:
👩🏾💼 Your business is operational but not yet institution-ready
It’s not about:
🤐 intelligence
🤐 effort, or…
🤐 ambition
It IS about:
🎯 alignment.
Alignment between:
• How your business operates
• And how your business is evaluated,
Until that alignment exists-access will remain limited.
🔴Introducing The Zoma Fundability Framework™
This is why I developed the Zoma Fundability Framework™
Because closing The Readiness Gap requires more than motivation.
It requires structure.
The framework focuses on FIVE signals:
1️⃣ Clarity
Can your business be understood quickly?
• What do you sell?
• Who do you serve?
• Why should someone choose you?
2️⃣ Pricing Power
Is your pricing:
• consistent?
• intentional?
• aligned with value?
3️⃣ Revenue Visibility
Can your income be:
• tracked?
• documented?
• explained?
4️⃣ Consistency (A CRITICAL LAYER)
Does your business perform reliably over time?
• Are sales repeatable?
• Are clients recurring?
• Is delivery stable?
5️⃣ Operational Structure
Do you have:
• systems?
• processes?
• repeatable delivery?
When these are in place…
something shifts.
AND your business then becomes:
🫰🏾 measurable
🫰🏾 explainable
🫰🏾 FUNDABLE
“Fundability isn’t about proving your business works.
It’s about removing the need for others to guess.”
🔴What Happens When “Readiness” Improves
When a business becomes structured:
👑 lenders gain confidence
👑 partners engage more quickly
👑 growth accelerates
Because now-
The business isn’t just functioning.
It’s:
👉🏾 visible
👉🏾 predictable
👉🏾 investable
